Selling an iPhone is a two-minute job at the meetup if you have done a few things first. Here is the order we recommend.
1. Back up
Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. If you are short on iCloud space, connect to a Mac or PC and back up there. Make sure the backup finishes before you do anything else.
2. Unpair your Apple Watch
If you have an Apple Watch, open the Watch app, tap your watch, then the info button and Unpair. This removes Activation Lock from the watch too.
3. Transfer or deregister iMessage
Moving to another iPhone? Skip this. Moving to Android? Turn off iMessage in Settings → Messages so your texts keep arriving.
4. Sign out of iCloud
Settings → your name → scroll down → Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password. This turns off Find My and removes Activation Lock, which is the single most important step. A phone still locked to an Apple ID is only worth a parts price to any buyer.
5. Erase the phone
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. The phone restarts to the Hello screen. That is what we want to see at the meetup.
6. Remove the SIM
If you have a physical SIM, pop it out. eSIMs are removed by the erase.
7. Gather what you have
The box and cable are not required, but bring them if you have them. Wipe the phone down and take the case off so the condition is easy to see.
